Cuando para validar y verificar utilizamos testing para valorar interfaces con el elemento humano, por ejemplo los relacionados con la operación ferroviaria, normalmente se realizan pruebas de laboratorio y con simuladores, pero no se considera el aspecto situacional o contextual del usuario final en su puesto real de trabajo con todas sus interacciones.

Los diseñadores, ingenieros de software y responsables del HMI son muy competentes en la tecnología utilizada para la implementación de los interfaces, ahora bien, un diseño seguro es requisito para una operación segura, los interfaces más eficientes requieren de conocimientos de ergonomía, de factores humanos y organizacionales, de diseño centrado en el usuario y de psicología cognitiva, así como de la tarea real donde se utilizará el elemento o producto a testear.

Para una operación segura, se requiere de interfaces seguros, amigables, que satisfagan las necesidades técnicas de funcionamiento, que minimice los errores operativos (interfaces resistentes al error humano), y que resulte fiable incluyendo al humano como parte del sistema en cualquier circunstancia, sea en operaciones normales o degradadas.
